That makes this TicWatch comfortably last two full days on a charge. Tap it and you'll be treated to a wonderful AMOLED, but when the screen goes into standby mode, it'll switch to a monochrome LCD panel that merely sips battery juice. What makes this watch special is the dual-layer screen.
Also, the design is a bit ordinary I recommend swapping the 22-mm strap for something more exciting. It's a bulky watch, so it's not for all wrists. Scrolling through the interface is very smooth, with speedy app launches I get timely notifications I can interact with or dismiss and it does a surprisingly great job of tracking the most important health metrics, like SpO2, step count, 24/7 heart rate monitoring, and sleep. Nevertheless, it does all the things I need. No, it does not have Google's newest Wear OS 3 version, but it is slated to get it sometime in 2022.

Mobvoi has been churning out smartwatches running Google's Wear OS platform for years, and the latest TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra shows this level of refinement. The downside? Neither the watch nor the apps that run on it are very intuitive to use, so there's a bit of a learning curve. It also includes Garmin Pay, which will work anywhere contactless payments are accepted.

You can get basic notification alerts, such as calls, texts, and emails, and if you have an Android phone, you can respond to texts on the watch. Better yet, they'll last around five to seven days on a single charge. Both models deliver accurate fitness-tracking data, with features like blood oxygen monitoring, built-in GPS, and sleep tracking. The Music Edition is the best choice if you have a Spotify, Amazon Music, or Deezer subscription, since you can fill the watch with tunes or podcasts that you can take with you on a run or an outdoors workout. But the Garmin Venu Sq and Venu Sq Music Edition ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends) are excellent and relatively affordable watches that do more than your average fitness tracker.
If you're prioritizing health and fitness, read our Best Fitness Trackers guide. Watch4 Classic comes in 42- or 46-mm sizes. It's nice, but not quite worth the $100 extra. The Classic version of the watch is made of stainless steel instead of aluminum, and it has a mechanical rotating bezel around the screen for navigating the interface. If your wrist can manage it, I recommend sizing up to get the more capable battery. Battery life is lackluster, with the smaller models lasting just a day. The latter isn't even available in the US yet. Unfortunately, the electrocardiogram and blood pressure monitoring features only work if you have a Samsung phone. You still get a bright OLED screen, smooth performance, and accurate health and fitness tracking features, including heart rate and SpO2. Surprisingly, Samsung managed to retain nearly the same interface and many features from its previous smartwatches. While third-party apps are still trickling in since the switch to Wear OS, expect many more to arrive over the next year. Samsung's Galaxy Watch4 and Watch4 Classic ( 7/10, WIRED Recommends) are the first to use Google's Wear OS 3 instead of the company's homegrown Tizen operating system. There's also the Series 3, which is getting a bit old at this point, but it does the basics and is frequently on sale. It debuted alongside the Series 6 and is the model for those who balk at a $400 price and don't need an electrocardiogram, SpO2, or the always-on display found on Apple's premium watches. ★ Cheaper alternatives: The Apple Watch SE ($279) is worth a look. Unfortunately, battery life is still mediocre you'll need to charge it in the evening (before you go to bed) if you want to track your sleep, especially if you used the watch to track a workout or two during the day. There's a sensor to measure oxygen saturation in the blood (SpO2)-helpful for athletes training at altitude or if you have an underlying health condition-and the FDA-cleared electrocardiogram sensor. The health features haven't changed much since the last version. The bigger screen means you also can use a full-screen keyboard for swipe-typing short messages too.

The new Series 7 ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends) has a larger and brighter screen, faster charging, improved resistance to water and dust, plus the ability to automatically detect when you've hopped on an ebike so it can properly log that activity. It has the best operating system, WatchOS, which is slick with plenty of apps to help reduce the number of times you need to pull out your phone. The Apple Watch is the best smartwatch money can buy.
